PIHI Youth Hockey League

PIHI Youth Hockey League

There are three different age divisions within the PIHI Youth League: U10, U13 and our new Mini-Mite program. We generally follow USA Hockey Inline’s age guidelines to determine which division players should participate. However, players may be moved up or down a division based on assessment of the following areas: skill, age/grade, motivation, maturity level, and size.

At the lower age divisions, there is significant concentration on fundamental skills development. As the players advance in their skills, and through the age groups, the focus remains on skills development, but also expands to positioning, strategy, and ultimately the finer details of the game.

Our minimite program will be a 10-week season with each week consisting of approximately 25 minutes of instruction and 25 minutes of game play. Our minimites train and play on our smaller training rink to help our young skaters transition from our Learn to Play program to our house youth league. Each player is provided a team jersey.

Our 10u season is typically split between one-half practices and one-half games and takes place on our full size competition rink. Schedules are generated to ensure that each team plays an equal number of games against each other and practices fill in the remainder of the schedule. Every team is eligible for the season ending playoffs. Players are assigned jerseys by the league and are of the same or similar color.

The 13u and up divisions are generally one-half practices and one-half games. Games and practices take place on our full size competition rink. Every team is eligible for the season ending playoffs. Players are assigned jerseys by the league and are of the same or similar color.

For each division, individuals are evaluated and then assigned to create balanced teams. Inexperienced players are also encouraged to enroll in our weekly Learn to Play program mentioned above. Additionally, all players are encouraged to participate in our youth player development camps that are held at our facility as well as third party instructional camps held at the Box (e.g. First Line Hockey camp). All youth teams will consist of a minimum of 8 skaters and 1 goalie and a maximum of 12 skaters.
